Alumni Profiles: Spencer Wood and Gwen Sharp

  • Spencer Wood received his Ph.D. from the UW in 2006. He is an assistant professor in the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work at Kansas State. Spencer’s current research projects include an exploration of the role of violence and non-violence in the rural dimensions of the Civil Rights Movement, democratizing agricultural technologies, the historical emergence of Memphis as a center of Black culture, and a community-based research project on the impact of an urban agricultural project on the health and nutritional disparities facing a predominantly Black community in Kansas City, KS.
  • Gwen Sharp received her PhD. from the UW in 2005. She is currently an assistant professor in the Department of Social Sciences as Nevada State College. Gwen is the co-creator of the blog, Sociological Images. The blog includes daily posts of images and accompanying sociological analyses. Sociological Images receives close to 500,000 visitors each month.
